Side effects of chemotherapy: Anemia

Anemia occurs when you have too few red blood cells to carry the oxygen your body needs, and your hemoglobin level is less than 12 mg/dL.

Your heart works harder when the body isn't getting enough oxygen, and this can make you feel like your heart is beating too fast. Anemia can also make you feel short of breath, weak, dizzy, or weak.

What is anemia and why does it occur?

Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body.

Some types of chemotherapy cause anemia because they make it difficult for the bone marrow to produce new red blood cells.

Cancer patients can also develop anemia due to bleeding, bone marrow disease, radiotherapy, organ dysfunction (heart, lung, liver, or kidney), or nutritional deficiency.

Anemia is believed to be a contributing factor to fatigue and asthenia, and its treatment has led to debilitation in several clinical trials.

Studies have even demonstrated that increased hemoglobin in advanced disease states leads to an improved Quality of Life.

What is the drug treatment for anemia?

Drug therapy helps in treating low red blood cell count so that “blood transfusion” or “red blood cell transfusion” is not used to avoid the risks of viral or bacterial infection from a blood transfusion.

The drug treatment for anemia is Recormon, the scientific name: Epoetin alfa, which stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells, thus increasing the number of red blood cells and treating anemia.

One way to correct anemia is through the use of blood transfusions, and in some cases, this may be the best method, especially if the patient is bleeding or has certain symptoms.
