The benefits and harms of caffeine shampoo
Caffeine can offer many benefits for hair, including:
Inhibition of the hair loss hormone DHT
Promote hair growth
Enhance hair length
Support the growth of healthy, strong hair.
Inhibiting the hair loss hormone
More hair loss in men than in women is caused by the destruction of the hair follicle by DHT. Androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern baldness, affects more than 50% of men over the age of 50.
Research shows that caffeine can be a treatment to discourage male pattern baldness. Women with high levels of DHT can also experience hair loss.
This happens more commonly after menopause.
Increase hair length
A 2007 study found that caffeine shampoo can help block the effects of DHT in male hair follicles while also stimulating increased hair growth.
This results in longer and wider hair roots. Biopsies were taken from 14 patients aged 2045 years.
Each is rated between stages 3 and 4 on the Norwood Scale, a rating system used to measure baldness.
The results concluded that the longer the hair follicles were exposed to caffeine, the longer the hair shaft.
Another 2014 study showed that caffeine can lengthen the hair shaft, even after the hair follicles have been exposed to testosterone.
Promote hair health and strength
The power is rich in antioxidants, which is what pleases coffee lovers. These antioxidants can also benefit hair.
Regularly treating damaged hair with caffeine allows its antioxidant properties to repair and prevent hair damage
